Why managing your time is crucial to your business

productivity tips Nov 06, 2023

Does this resonate with you: "I haven't gotten anywhere near as much done today as I should have" or "Where do all the hours in a day go?"

This tends to happen when you don't plan your day. Yes, that is correct. You do NEED to plan your day to make it a huge success. It is crucial if you are serious about getting stuff done! The best way to start is to sort out your "to-do" list and do that at the end of the day for the following day, while the tasks are fresh in your mind. DO NOT add more than 5 or 6 tasks to the list; otherwise, you will look at it in the morning and wander off to make another coffee, come back, screw up the list, and sit for an hour wondering where to start. Does that sound familiar? I wonder how many times a day, week, or month this actually happens and how many hours you have wasted.

When you get to your desk in the morning, pick up your list and read through it, then start with the toughest job first. You know what I am talking about; it is the one that you keep putting off, and it plays up in your mind every day, making you tut and shake your head because it is still there, glaring at you. GET IT DONE FIRST! Funnily enough, the other 4 or 5 tasks after that are a breeze, and at the end of the day, you will be over the moon with how successful and productive your day has been.

Of course, there are more things you can do, such as block out time in your calendar for the tasks of the day. Include personal or family things too, which are so important to our mental wellbeing. Do book your time in your calendar to be with your family too (and stick to it). They will love it, and so will you, even if it is just a lunch break.

If you find it difficult to spend hours on a task, then don't. There are various techniques that you can try, such as Pomodoro, where you work for 25 minutes solid and break for 5 minutes, or you could work in blocks of 90 minutes with a 15-minute break in between. I personally find the latter works for me when I have good, solid tasks to do, as my focus becomes spot on and I can crack through my list of tasks and objectives.

Once you have mastered the planning stage of your business and got your tasks in order and completed, you have the rest of the day to work with existing clients, market your business to new clients and I bet at the end of the day you will feel brilliant and happy that you have achieved so much in one day! You may even catch yourself smiling or doing a little success dance!
